Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure "Mermaid's Tale"

When I first caught wind of Sally Hansen's new blue and green hexagonal glitter Mermaid's Tale, I knew it would be one of those polishes I'd be out searching for on my lunch break daily. Week after week I'd stalk the shelves of Bed Bath & Beyond, Walgreens, and Duane Reade until at last I found a sole bottle at CVS mixed in randomly with some other polishes! I've since learned that Mermaid's Tale is permanent so you should be able to track it down without too much trouble :)

Mermaid's Tale was well worth the effort it took to find it. One of the newest additions to the Complete Salon Manicure line, this "glitter sandwich-style" polish consists of large blue and green hexagonal pieces and smaller blue glitter suspended in a deep blackened blue jelly base. Sally Hansen's Complete Salon Manicure wide paddle brush is PERFECT for applying these glitter pieces evenly across the nail. This brush is everything the Sephora X Chaotic brush should have been. The glitter was easy to pull from the bottle - I love how it glows under the jelly base. The formula is syrupy and not runny.

Because the base color is sheer, you do need to apply at least (3) coats for opaque coverage. In this picture I am wearing (3) coats of Mermaid's Tale alone:

I think I love Mermaid's Tale even more over black. Shown below, I'm wearing (2) coats over Wet & Wild Black Creme.

Removal is as bad as glitter removal gets. The flat hexagonal glitters really grab onto the nail. But to me, this is a polish so lovely that the terrible removal is worth tolerating :)

From what I've seen, Mermaid's Tale is very similar to "the original" blue and green hex glitter Deborah Lippman's Across the Universe but it's not a dupe of Two Birds Shines By Night. I found Mermaid's Tale at my local CVS for $8.99.

  2. After weeks of searching every store within miles, I finally found this at Walgreen's and was so happy. It is absolutely beautiful. There is also the most stunning blue on the display next to it called Blue My Mind. It did.

    1. Ooo I saw that one too! I love those bright vivid blues :) There was also Black & Blue - the duochrome - that looked great too, but I passed because it looked like a few others I have.

  3. I bought Across The Universe when it first came out. This one looks similar but I think I like this better. ATU has a little less hex shape glitter - or maybe they are smaller and they tend to sink into the color on your nail not giving the pay off this one looks like it has...or maybe that's the light it's catching...ummm...guess I need to dig out my bottle of DL ATU and take a new look at it. Very cool if it is really close to the original ATU - I wore that a lot and it broke me of wanting to have OPI's Mad As a Hatter on 90% of the time since I did not find another back up for MAH until about 10 months after it came out. I guess I am lucky to have a ton of greats - funny - does no seem that long ago right now they were out but I guess it is!

    1. Wow Across the Universe and Mad As A Hatter are classic! I agree, can't believe those are "older" colors, I remember so clearly when the Alice collection came out I found it and passed on Absolutely Alice... who know that it would eventually be one of "the" polishes to have :)

    1. It's fun and the glitter isn't "in your face", so it's subtle, in a way!
