Chanel Taboo: Swatches and Comparisons

I don't remember when or where I first caught glimpse of Chanel's wondrous new purple polish Taboo from their Spring 2013 Revelation de Chanel collection, but I do know that ever since, I haven't been able to get it out of my head. I stopped by the Chanel counter at Bloomingdale's earlier this week "just to look" but once I saw Taboo in person, I knew I had to have it! So fair warning - you, too, may not be able to stop thinking about Taboo once you've seen it :)

Chanel Taboo is a dark, cool toned purple polish infused with tiny vivid burgundy and blue shimmer flecks. Unlike dark polishes that look black unless seen in direct sunlight, Taboo reveals it's purple soul inside. The glorious burgundy and blue shimmer isn't shy and is also visible indoors. Here's the excellent part: because there is both warm and cool shimmer, Taboo will look different in different lighting. In some lighting, it will appear more of a pinker purple and in others it will appear more of a bluer purple. How can this polish be purple, blue, and pink at the same time?!

The formula is perfect. Taboo applies wonderfully in (1) coat but I added a second to intensify the shimmer and add depth. Taboo doesn't dry super glossy so I added Seche Vite Dry Fast top coat.

Here's a straight-on shot to show the beautiful shimmer:

Taboo doesn't look exactly on the nail as it does in the bottle. You can see here that the warm burgundy shimmer really clings to the side of the bottle and looks pink:

Taboo is a really complex and excellent polish. I absolutely adore everything about it!

Chanel nail polishes retail for $27 - yikes - so for $27, I really should be thinking about this polish non-stop. It better be so incredible that it sends me running to the counter in fear that the person who gets there 0.5 seconds before me will get the last one. Also - this is going to be a hard one for the drug store brands to dupe ;) Even though my birthday isn't for a few months, Taboo will be a birthday present. Right after swatching, my boyfriend actually hid it from me!

In NYC, Chanel nail polish can be purchased at Barneys, Bloomingdale's, Henri Bendel, Lord & Taylor, Macy's, and Saks. Online, I recommend Nordstrom (affiliate link) for free shipping.

So Chanel Taboo is fabulous, but how does it compare to other purple shimmers in my collection? Keep reading for some comparisons!

In the bottle, I thought Chanel Taboo might be close to Zara Yasmeen. But as I discovered, the shimmer isn't quite the same on the nail so it doesn't look like Yasmeen. See Yasmeen swatched here.

The polish I was most interested in comparing Taboo to was OPI Every Month is Oktoberfest. While Taboo contains burgundy shimmer, Every Month is Oktoberfest doesn't have the additional blue shimmer.

Pointer and ring fingers: OPI Every Month is Oktoberfest | Middle and pinkie fingers: Chanel Taboo

How about OPI Russian Navy? While the shimmer in Russian Navy is very close in color, the overall color is blue and not purple. Taboo also has tiny flecks of shimmer that really dazzle while Russian Navy has a more solid and consistent shimmer.

Pointer and ring fingers: OPI Russian Navy | Middle and pinkie fingers: Chanel Taboo

How about this revelation - Chanel Taboo looks on the nail a lot like OPI Russian Navy looks in the bottle!

While not dupes, I'd say Chanel Taboo is somewhat a blend of OPI Every Month is Oktoberfest and Russian Navy :) Can you think of any other polishes similar to Chanel Taboo?

What do you think? Do you love Taboo as much as I do? Will you now be thinking about it non-stop like I was?

  8. Holy gorgeous. I love this. I have too many complex purples in my stash (Zoya Valerie, CG Let's Groove, CG Draped in Velvet), so I will probably be able to hold off (esp. given the price). Who knows, though? Maybe I won't be able to get this one out of my head. Thanks for the beautiful swatches!

  10. It is lovely but ouch - the price - even on NYC standards where you get used to tons of $$$ things or getting the knock offs way less. I stopped falling for Chanel after the release of graphite, Peridot - that was it for me and the price went up even more after I bought those. I know there are always going to be a few shades here and there that are TDF like this one - but with so much polishes in my stash I don't even wear yet love so much, I can shop my own stash and find something that makes me happy and does not chip like Chanel does on me in less than a day of wear time.

    1. I passed on Graphite, Peridot, and even Malice for a similar reason! I have a weakness for purple shimmers though :) And I also rationalized this purchase because I knew I would be sharing pictures with everyone here and helping lots of gals make a decision to get it or not!

  22. Wow, that is amazing! Thanks for the swatches and comparison!
I really hope some brands will make a passable dupe like with Peridot or Paradoxal! Just in case they don't I think I should start saving now ;)

    1. I hope so too, although this one is so complex it might be hard to get a good dupe this time :)

  24. Oh dear this isn't going to end well, I think I am in love with a nail polish!! I love stars especially the look of nebulas etc. and this reminds me of it so much!! I may have just written an entire review on my blog about how I bought a Barry M dupe of an old Chanel because I didn't want to spend the money, I need this in my collection so a splurge may be necessary :L

    1. Yesss it does have a galactic look to it! I think this one is going to be hard to dupe (although I'm sure we'll see some attempts!)

  26. Ordered it on Friday. It will be here tomorrow. I cannot wait!!!! All it took was just one picture and I knew I had to have it. Can't afford, don't care. I love anything Chanel. And this is something I can "afford" where Chanel is concerned. Thanks for the beautiful pics.

    1. Hi reisday, I've found that the wear time of Chanel polish isn't any better or worse than the average polish :/ I had to have this one simply because the color is so special!

  28. I have been lusting after the polish forever, and I'm trying to talk myself into picking it up. It's just so beautiful, but I'm afraid I'll spend that much for it, and I'll be disappointed. I was lusting after OPI Smitten with Mittens, and when I finally got my hands on it, it wasn't what I thought it would be, and I had other shimmering reds that I liked better. What is a girl to do?

    1. Ohhh always a bummer when a polish ends up being a disappointment! Do you live by a Chanel counter? Maybe give it a test run before deciding. Or, maybe find a store that allows nail polish returns!
