"Let these illusionary topcoats alter your reality and add another dimension to transform any color into something completely new. Innovative textures and particle sizes transform your manicure with never-before-seen effects. A savvy substitute to your traditional topcoat with all of the benefits, it features a patented formulation for invincible long-wear, anti-chip, UV protection that is also water- and detergent-resistant. Wear alone or layer with a Sephora X nail color to add an edge to your look." [source]
Back in November/December, new displays started appearing in Sephoras around Manhattan and the country of a new nail polish line by Sephora called Sephora X. The line includes about 40 polishes spanning a broad range of color and finish and boasts "unprecedented color, spectacular shine and incredible long-wear".
While the initial reviews of Sephora X polishes have been average, there is one polish in the lineup that seems to be getting decent attention - the "illusionary graffiti black and white confetti" Chaotic. Black and white glitter may be nothing new to those familiar with independent nail polish brands, but Chaotic is the first to be available at a national beauty retailer.
Chaotic
Chaotic is a mix of black and white variously sized hexagonal glitter and thin black bars suspended in a clear base. The glitter is densely packed and a breeze to apply - I only needed one coat to evenly sprinkle my entire nail with 'chaotic' bits. The narrow brush - which is similar to the Sephora by OPI brush - is not doing the great formula any favors and I wish it were wider.
Here is one coat of Sephora X Chaotic over OPI Shorts Story (one of my all-time favorite pinks):
One coat of Sephora X Chaotic over China Glaze For Audrey looks awesome:
Here is one coat of Sephora X Chaotic over CND Asphalt (received for review) and topped with Essie Matte About You matte top coat:
I love that the Sephora X bottles are sealed with plastic, something I wish other manufacturers would take note of. Now I know for certain that someone wasn't painting their name or doodling all over the display with the polish I just purchased ;)
About that cap. The Sephora X caps are large and angular and unlike Chanel or butter LONDON, it doesn't pop off to reveal the smaller applicator. The square Sephora X cap twists off and the brush is actually attached to it. Not only is this shape and size awkward to hold, but the cap is thin plastic and not reinforced at the base. I do expect that it will eventually crack either while opening or closing it, especially if you are like me and need the cap to line up with the bottle.
Cap design flaw and thin brush aside, Chaotic is an amazing polish and one of my top nail polishes of 2012. I could keep going and going layering Chaotic over different colors! What polish would you layer Chaotic over?
I thank Mara (http://www.marainpolishland.com) for introducing me to the Sephora X polishes and Chaotic in particular. Mara compared Chaotic to Lynnderella's Connect the Dots here.
Sephora X polishes can be purchased in Sephora stores and online. The price of Chaotic was marked $11.50, but when I bought it, it rang up $9.50 as some kind of promotion. Link!
Have you tried any of the Sephora X polishes yet? Volatile and Pyscho also intrigue me.

All great combos! love it over FA the most though, need to try that
ReplyDeleteThe color really works well with the black & white glitter!
Delete*sigh* I can't find these in my Sephora! I LURVE those huge black hex's!!
ReplyDeleteOh no, hopefully they are still rolling them out, the line is still somewhat new!
DeleteSUCH a cute polish!! I love it over Shorts Story, and it looks especially amazing over For Audrey! Looks like a better version of that China Glaze polish they released in the Cirque du Soleil collection
ReplyDeleteYES I heard not so great things about the formula of that :/
DeleteI keep meaning to buy it, I love this type of glitter. It reminds me of spray paint.
ReplyDeleteOoo you're so right!
DeleteOkay I need this, asap.

....aaaand purchased!
DeleteAHHHH I love it!!!
DeleteThis looks a lot like Lynderella connect the dots???
ReplyDeleteYes it really does! Check out Mara's comparison post: http://www.marainpolishland.com/2012/11/sephora-x-chaotic-aka-lynnderella.html
DeleteThis glitter polish is amaaaaaazing! I really think I need it :D
ReplyDeleteIt's wonderful, especially if you don't have any others like it!
DeleteGreat combos!
ReplyDeleteThanks! I want to do more and more but realized I would never get this review done lol
Deletesurprise, another black and white glitter :)
ReplyDeletehehehe... this one is my first like it so please forgive my enthusiasm ;)
DeleteGlad that I can pass on these with their crazy caps and higher prices. Love your layering combos but I'll gladly stick with indies for my B&W glitters! =)
ReplyDeleteHappy to help! I would love to try the indies too, but I didn't have to pay shipping to get my hands on this one :)
DeleteIt's a bummer about the cap, but this polish looks good! I find it fascinating how larger brands are starting to take ideas from indie polish makers.
ReplyDeleteTotal bummer, I don't know how that got past testing!!! Agree - I thought that also when Nails Inc came out with the Sprinkles line :)
DeleteLove every mani you did with this!
ReplyDeleteThanks Deborah! I wanted to do more but never would have posted this review lol

ReplyDeleteThis polish is fantastic!! My new absolute fave!
ReplyDeleteI too am not in love with the wide square cap - I guess it makes the bottle look sexy, but functional it ain't. But that aside, I can't get enough of Chaotic. It's my favorite of the B+W Glitters I have tried (and less expensive than Lynderella, so woohoo). It really DOES look like spray paint - I don't know how to describe it. The glitter applies smoothly with no need for fishing or spot-placing; the polish has like a sheen to it that makes the glitter look shellack-y even before topcoat; and the glitter itself is a perfect blend of fun but also sophisticated (I don't worry about ppl thinking I think I am in junior high, like I do w/other glitter polishes). I love Chaotic over pretty much any base color, but teal, bright pink and brown are my faves (over brown, it looks like I have the equivalent of Cookie Crisp on my nails. nummy).
I haven't tried other Sephora X polishes - but I am really curious about Psycho too (ohh, please swatch it!), as well as In Like and Hoodlum (looks like a cool putty gray).
Ooo I like that idea over a brown lol! I saw a great mani with a black & white glitter where they sandwiched it between a sheer white - it looked SO cool.
DeleteThat does sound awesome - I love jelly sandwich manis! =) I think the matte mani you did over CND Asphalt is made of awesome!! First of all, I must own CND Asphalt. And secondly, I FINALLY picked up Matte About You after deliberating over the best matte topcoats; so I am all sorts of excited to mattify Chaotic. The possibilities with this polish are endless! LOL - it really is a must own!
DeleteI need this in my life!! Putting it on my nail polish wish list!!
ReplyDeleteYou will not be disappointed!!! Let me know what you wear it over!
DeleteI want to try it over Ali from Zoya! I am in LOVE with that color.
DeleteOh happy day! I NEED thispolish!
ReplyDeleteIt’s rainy here, the family is watching a Fringe dvd marathon and the crockpot is bubbling!
Hope this finds you having an awesome day too!

Happy polish hunting! Hope you had a great weekend!
DeleteI very much hate attached square caps as well: they NEVER ever align the way I want them to (or they do not close enough, or you have the applay a wrench to get them there). Love the glitter, even when I have seen it a thousand times...it's timeless!
ReplyDeletehaha no they never do go back on quite right :) Still not stopping me from using this over and over again!
DeleteThe square capos do indeed suck. Really wish they popped off, as with better square-cap brands. Awkward to handle during use and almost never line up right again.
ReplyDeleteThat said, Chaotic is a pretty fabulous polish - easily one of my favorites of 2012.
Also got Deranged, one of the Sephora X Prismatics. Lovely duochrome look in the bottle -- total snooze on the nail. Deranged will be going into the swap/trade/giveaway pile, I suspect.
But, yes, adoring Chaotic!
Oh no! That's so disappointing! Chaotic seems to be the saving grace of this line lol :)
DeleteWOW! i LOVE the matte one! it really does look quite chaotic, its properly named too!
ReplyDeleteMatte almost makes it look like the pieces are frozen :)
