Top 5 Winter 2012/2013 Nail Polish Trends

Fall in the city is coming to a very blustery and chilly conclusion this year - the warm air and pretty fall leaves came to an abrupt and early end once Sandy was done with us :/ But with the holidays right around the corner, there are many wonderful sights to see around the city and deals to be found. Soon we will be saying goodbye to 2012 and welcoming 2013!

The biggest trends in nail polish this winter are takes on traditional "holiday" colors. Gold, berry, red, and emerald green dominate the winter collections this year and while these colors might seem trite, the minds behind creating these polishes have found ways to keep them exciting and new.

I selected five nail polish trends I think are standouts this season. For each trend, I'll share a polish in my collection and information about where you can purchase them. I've also created a Winter 2012/2013 Nail Polish Trends board on Pinterest :)

5. At-Home Gels

Nail polish that stays shiny and chip-free for up to 14 days that you can do at home? Yes, please! Gel manicures have become popular and now there are several kits available so you can DIY a gel manicure. This sounds wonderful to try out before going on vacation!

Kiss Everlasting Gel Polish - coming soon in 2013!
Red Carpet Manicure Gel Polish Pro Kit, $79.99 from Drugstore.com
Sally Hansen Salon Gel Polish Starter Kit, $69.99 from Ulta
Sally Hansen Insta-Gel Strips Starter Kit, $29.99 from Ulta
Sephora by OPI gelshine™ At-Home Gel Colour System, $159 from Sephora

4. Dazzling Emerald
The emerald polishes that came out this winter are some of the best I've ever seen. If green polish hasn't won you over yet, these beauties might change the way you feel about it. If you are already on team green, these stunning emeralds might earn a spot on your top favorites list!

butter LONDON Jack the Lad, $14 from many retailers including Nordstrom and Ricky's

Cirque Lonesome George, $15 from Cirque
Color Club Ho Ho Holly, $3.10 from Heat 2 Toe Beauty
Illamasqua Viridian, $25 (part of a holiday duo with Glitterati) from Sephora
Pahlish Still Alive, $9 from Etsy
Zoya Logan, $8 from Zoya.com

3. Glowing, Pseudo-Vampy Red
It seems everywhere you look this winter, there is a version of this glowing red polish that looks as shiny and metallic as an ornament. This red is deep but is a few shades away from looking blackened, making this a "pseudo-vampy" trend. Fortunately, there are many options available ranging in price from $1.99 to $26.

Sally Hansen Lacquer Shine Shining (I don't think this is available anymore)

Chanel Malice, $26 from Bloomingdale's
China Glaze Short & Sassy, $5 from Amazon.com
Illamasqua Charisma, $14 from Sephora
Misa Bourbon On The Rocks, $7.50 from Misa Cosmetics
OPI German-icure by OPI, $8.50 from various retailers including Duane Reade and Ulta
Orly Smolder, $8.50 from Beauty.com
Sinful Colors Rich in Heart, $1.99 from Duane Reade
Zoya Blair, $8 from Zoya.com

2. Sparkling Berry
This season many brands gave us true berry polishes - the kind that sit nicely in the middle on the scale between pink and red - with a glistening "something extra". These polishes are perfect to wear to any holiday event!

Zoya Blaze, $8 from Zoya.com

butter LONDON Fiddlesticks, $14 from various retailers including Ricky's
Essie Leading Lady, $8 from various retailers including Beauty.com
Etoile Frosted Berry, $18 from Etoile Polish (a NYC brand!)
Illamasqua Glitterati, $25 (part of a holiday duo with Viridian) from Sephora
Orly Miss Conduct, $8 from Ulta
Shimmer Polish Karina, $12 from Etsy

1. Real Gold
The most indulgent of nail polish trends - possibly ever - is the real gold top coat trend. While these gold flaky polishes are certainly not inexpensive, the final look is so spectacular that if you're going to splurge on a polish, you might as well splurge on one of these :) How soon until "fool's gold" top coats hit the shelves?

Cirque Au (shown over Cirque Planet Caravan), $28 from Cirque

OPI The Man With the Golden Gun, $30 from Ulta and Essentials
Sephora by OPI It's Real 18K Gold Top Coat, $15 from Sephora
Zoya 18K Real Gold Nail Polish Top Coat, $28 from Amazon (no longer available from Zoya.com)

  6. Great summary! I think I would've added all those polishes in "cozy sweater colors", such as Berlin there done that (OPI) and Frenzy (Chanel) - but maybe they are only a trend here in Vienna? :)

  11. Great list! Any chance you will be doing a " best of retail trend" list? I live in the country where any beauty store is VERY scarce. Trying to find stuff that is easy to find.
