Never one to turn down a trip to a drug store, when a co-worker asked me to come along to CVS on our lunch break to print pictures for mother's day and I gladly tagged along. While the photos were printing, I conveniently had some time to kill in the beauty aisle... and it was on this spontaneous trip that I stumbled on quite possibly the most epic CVS find ever: an OPI DS polish!
Here's where I need your help - I don't actually know for certain which DS polish this is! There was no name label on the bottle of this beautifully intensely holographic lavender polish. The bar code was so worn down that the cashier had to manually enter the SKU. Maybe this CVS was doing some spring cleaning in the stock room???
As soon as I could, I Tweeted a picture of this polish and several of you guessed OPI DS Original. Mara from Bar à Ongles actually ran right over and bought the only other one. Mara is also pretty sure it's DS Original. But what about DS Amethyst?
In direct sunlight, the holo is intense and linear. The purple color is stronger than it appears inside. I didn't use a top coat and it's still so shiny!
Indoors, the holo is still impressively visible however the color appears lighter and much pinker. Because this polish looks different based on the lighting, it's hard to look up pictures online and compare :)
So what do you think this polish is? OPI DS Original, OPI DS Amethyst, or something else?
Bottle shot - so much holo!!! Indoors, natural lighting

It's way to lilac for amethyst I think and I just googled a comparison of those too and I'd say it's original too. Well, it's gorgeous whatever it really is. xD
ReplyDeleteIt really is a beautiful shade, I love that it transforms from a shy lilac to a really VIVID purple outside!
DeleteOPI DS Original. Whoop whoop!
ReplyDeleteYEA!!! That's another vote for Original!!!
DeleteI believe it's Original. My Amethyst is more pink than my Original and Amethyst is sheer.
ReplyDeleteYou are lucky to have both! Thanks for letting me know :)
DeleteI'd bet my bottom dollar that is DS Original. It looks just like mine, bottle and swatches. You found yours at CVS? What a score! :D
ReplyDeleteHaha I can't believe it, I've never seen a DS polish at CVS before!
DeleteLove this color! I have a bottle and it's to die! You should Layer it over black and it looks awesome!
ReplyDeleteOh that's a fantastic idea!!!
DeleteI think it's Original! It looks stunning on you btw!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Elsa!
DeleteI think it's Original! But no matter which one it is, it's stunning and looking great on you!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Deborah! I'm lucky to know so many of you who are very well versed in their DS polishes :)
DeleteI pulled out my bottles of Original and Amethyst and you have DS Original. It's one of my favorite OPI DS polishes. Great score!
ReplyDeleteYou are so lucky to have both! Thanks for sharing, it's a big help to hear from you!
DeleteWow, that colour is so stunning! I would not mind that colour in my nail polish collection ;)
ReplyDeleteLots of Love, Ana

Hi Ana! Any holo is great to have... while lately I've been trying to avoid impulsive nail polish purchases, I will make the exception if I find a holo!
Deletewow! what a score! :) beautiful it looks a lot like Original
ReplyDeleteMajor win! And you're another vote for Original :) Thanks for sharing!
DeleteNot sure about which it is, but wow what a major score!! My CVS doesn't even have OPI's. :(
ReplyDeleteYea it seems that all CVS-es don't carry OPI, here it's hit or miss!
DeleteDefinitely Original. I'm shocked you found it at CVS... it's been out of production for years.
ReplyDeleteWow years? I AM really poorly versed in my DS knowledge! I was shocked, too... I do think more so now that someone was cleaning out the backroom and came across this and said let's sell it :)
DeleteIt is gorgeous ( but nope, I don't know what it is) .
ReplyDeleteHaha neither did I when I bought it... I guess it doesn't really need a name when it looks like this, does it :)
DeleteIt looks so amazing on you! The pictures with flash are just stunning. And I love the whole story, it was a treasure wainting for you (and for my friend Mara! she really rant as crazy that day, I read everything on Twitter and was so glad she finally found it!). You were so generous to share that info!
ReplyDeleteI could not wait to get on Twitter and share this find... that was such a fun day :) I am so happy Mara was able to get right over there :) Always glad to share epic finds!!!
DeleteFirst of all, THANK YOU!!!! I can even explain how I run like a maniac to that cvs to grab the other bottle!! My baby was sleeping and I put him on the stroller and went (with my 4yo too) haha
ReplyDeletethe moment I saw that magic bottle there... well, it's the best find EVER! And you were so generous to tell me, I would've bought all LOL!!
Did you come back to see the black labels? When I was there, I looked every OPI they had, just in case, and I found some old black labels too!! That CVS was a gold mine!
And another big thanks for the link to my little blog :-)
In other news, Gideon's manager emailed me today to tell me that the big China Glaze display had just arrived!! $6 each polish, I'll go later to see if there's something interesting... They already have prismatics with the same price!! Woohoo!!!!
That was so much fun, I'm so glad you went over and found it! SUCH a random and epic find, it doesn't happen often but when it does, it makes all those times of going and finding nothing totally worth it! I haven't gone back yet to look for black labels yet, I'm going to try this week :) Thanks for keeping me and everyone updated about the Gideon's finds!!! Wish I could walk there on my lunch break lol
DeleteCannot imagine how CVS ever got an OPI DS! However, have to say in a CVS in Los Angeles I went into, they had some old discontinued OPI's - I mean really old - so somewhere CVS (in some stores) has access to some vendor that gets this stuff and sells it to CVS probably in bulk volume so who knows what ends up in the bulk? I vote for DS Original...though in the one really light photo here - it has some look of Amethyst. I have both bottles and looking at my bottles here next to the screen shots (and I went through all my screen filters as well)... it's surly DS Origional -not a doubt in my mind.
ReplyDeleteIf they got a random shipment of OPI and a DS was in it, wow what luck! I love that you have both Original and Amethyst, thanks for weighing in :)
Deletefreaking amazing! would u pretty please tell where the cvs you found this awesome polish as is located? :D
ReplyDeleteHi Diana, it was at the CVS on 72nd St and 2nd Ave in Manhattan. There's no more holo, but a handful of "older" OPIs - I can only recall "Vodka & Cavier".
DeleteDef DS original!! I own amethyst and original, amethyst is a lot lighter n not quite as purple!!
ReplyDeleteThanks!!! You are luck to own both! It's hard to tell without having the other to compare it to, so I appreciate your expertise :)
