Field Trip: Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics

Until last week, Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics had only been available to non-industry professionals online. For years I've been ogling the beautiful swatches on your lovely blogs of the famous lip tars and nail polishes. You could only imagine my excitement when I learned that Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics was opening a flagship location in New York City on the Lower East Side!

Now open for business, I was like a kid in a candy store touching and feeling OCC products live and in person. Founder/creative genius David Klasfeld was on sight *excited noises!* I did, however, manage to keep it together and focus on shopping and learning about the products :)

The lips tars are everything I had hoped for and more! My boyfriend was stunned when he saw the color in the tube transfer to the back of my hand unaltered. Never had he (nor I) seen a lip product in a tube so pigmented. I love how lovely the lip tars look on display together.

The entire fall collection "Pretty Boy" was on display. Just look at those vivid blues and punchy pinks!

Of course, there were nail polishes to behold! The color selection can best be compared to a super saturated box of crayons. I'm surprised those neon polishes didn't create a lens flare :)

While compact in size (AKA standard for a NYC boutique), every inch the Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics flagship location is inspiring. I do hope you visit the next time you are in New York, you will be quite pleased and (as I did) will probably buy many fun and colorful things!

Visit Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics' flagship location at 174 Ludlow Street. You can make your wishlist  at http://www.occmakeup.com/.

On the Street: China Glaze Street Chic

Next to nail polish blogs, my favorite internet destinations are street style fashion blogs. Sure, it's fun to look at runway shows and gorgeous editorial creations, but street style is fascinating, inspirational, and endlessly unique. Street style fashion blogs share portraits of real people and their fashion concoctions, and the best part is that on a fashion blog, you can ogle and examine an outfit without feeling awkward about staring :)

Three of my favorite street style blogs are:
The Sartorialist
Mr. Newton
The Photodiarist/The Photodiarist in Color

One nail polish worth a long look is China Glaze "Street Chic". "Street Chic" is a warm taupey-brown shade that subtly declares you a fashionista. "Street Chic" falls on the milk chocolate end of the mushroom polish spectrum - I adore the small dash of dusty-ness but it's the lovely warm tones that set this shade apart from its less saturated relatives. With a smart shade like "Street Chic", it's no wonder that the warm, dusty brown trend was one of my top 5 fall polish trends!

I ♥ GOSH Purple Heart

Recently I was elated to find GOSH nail polishes at Duane Reade in NYC at 40 Wall Street and "Purple Heart" was one of the two beautiful purples I chose.

"Purple Heart" is a dusty duo-chrome that morphs from metallic purple to a cool greenish chrome. While purple is the primary color, the steely gunmetal hidden inside flashes strong.

Watch as "Purple Heart" transforms!

There are those subtle green tones!

I was expecting "Purple Heart" to be a thin color in need of "underwear", but this polish was almost perfect in one coat. The brush however was a little funny, it clumped together and fanned out only after the tenth nail as I was applying.

I forgot my beef with the brush after wearing this polish for four days with minimal tip wear. This is a color I personally didn't tire of - I typically am itching for a new shade after only a couple days :) While it's not a rainbow in a bottle, it is fascinating to watch as your nails change from strong purple to chrome in an instant.

Are GOSH polishes available where you live? What are some of your favorite shades?

New Store Opening: Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics

Image source: Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Facebook

Good news for color lovers and bad news for wallets - Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics will be opening their flagship location in the Lower East Side TOMORROW, September 23rd! Nail polish lovers and fans of bright, pigmented colors adore Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics. Long have I lusted over the saturated lip tars and crayon-box inspired polishes! I can't wait to see these products in person. Check out the OCC website and start making your shopping list.

The flagship location of Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics is located at 174 Ludlow Street between Houston and Stanton. The map has been updated!

Oh My Gosh I Found GOSH!

A few weekends ago, we were downtown and my boyfriend suggested visiting the new Duane Reade at 40 Wall Street. I was not particularly enthused because in New York City, Duane Reade (aka "DR") can be found on almost every street corner next to the Chase banks and Starbucks and goodness knows I'm stopping in them frequently enough searching for new drug store polish releases. But the 40 Wall Street location was hyped as a new concept store, and I try to be accommodating to my boyfriend's suggestions as he has patiently accompanied me on many a polish adventure.

A hologram-esque woman (not quite R2-D2's Princess Lea... did anyone else order Star Wars on Blu-ray this week?) welcomed us as we entered the massive 22,000 square foot drug store. Here you can pick up not just the essentials, but a sushi lunch and a smoothie from the juice bar. Bad hair day? You can get a blowout here before heading back to the office! While most of the store has the same look as other upgraded DRs around New York City, the magnitude and new services set this store apart from the rest.

While wandering through a super-sized yet otherwise common beauty section, I found a display I never expected to see in the United States, never the less in a Duane Reade on Wall Street.

I think the feeling that best describes seeing the display of GOSH cosmetics would be the excitement of stumbling on hidden treasure while not even following the map. Duane Reade? GOSH?! These are polishes I've only seen on your lovely blogs! I stood in front of the display for an unnatural amount of time, staring, just to fully take in what was there before me:

I asked the sales associate if any other Duane Reade locations sold GOSH, as this was the first time I had seen it anywhere in person. He said the 40 Wall Street location was piloting GOSH products, but they may expand to more DRs based on sales. I did a quick search around the interwebs when I came home and it seems back in March, several DR locations sold GOSH. Reader Michelle recently reported a GOSH sighting at DR around 35th and Broadway!

The employees must have wondered why I was so giddy while I examined each polish. While Holographic and Rainbow were sold out, I picked up Gasoline (an item on my wish list from years ago back when I started reading your lovely blogs) and Purple Heart.

GOSH polishes are $7.50 at Duane Reade. Let's hope these are here to stay :)

Dave Matthews Band: Magic Brownie nails

This weekend I was over on Randall's Island for the three-day Dave Matthews Band Caravan! It was an incredible weekend - we heard several great bands play and saw three amazing nights of DMB.

There was a Ben & Jerry's truck that was handing out cups of ice cream... but for some lucky reason, when we stopped by, they were giving out ENTIRE PINTS!!! Have you tried the Magic Brownies flavor? It's a raspberry and brownie concoction that's simply wonderful. I just happened to be wearing Revlon Facets of Fuchsia this weekend, which perfectly matched the ice cream :) Thanks Ben & Jerry's!!!

Revlon "Facets of Fuchsia" is a truly special gem containing multi-faceted pinky purple glitter pieces that float on top of a black jelly polish. I layered one coat of "Facets of Fuchsia" over Sally Hansen Hard as Nails Xtreme Wear "Black Out" for this magical manicure!

I visited several drug stores around Manhattan before finally finding Revlon's Expressionist Collection at Duane Reade on 200 Water Street. From what I've seen on your lovely blogs, it seems "Facets of Fuchsia" is a copy of "inspired by" Deborah Lippman's "Bad Romance". While Revlon doesn't win originality points, they wins wallet points. I paid $5.50 (ouch...) but that's still less than two-thirds of the $18 price tag on "Bad Romance"!

After a long and exhausting weekend, my body is tired but this mani still looks great :)

See you next time, Dave Matthew's Band!

New Store Opening: Sephora in the Meatpacking District

Tomorrow, Sephora will be opening it's 16th NYC location on 9th Ave and 13th St. The store will be giant (4,500 square feet) and is the first to feature "mobile checkout"... which I imagine to be similar to Apple's checkout model. There will be exclusive brands & products (several include Giorgio Armani cosmetics, Tatcha, and 21 Drops) and stations where you can learn to master beauty tricks or find the foundation that's right for you. You can pick up an exclusive tote bag with purchase at the grand opening!

Nail polish can be found at Sephora by Illamasqua, Nails Inc, NARS, Sephora by OPI, and Sephora's own house brand.

There seems to be a lot of hype behind this location! I saw the new store under construction during Fashion's Night Out and can't wait to visit after it opens. I always enjoy seeing a store I'm familiar taken to the next level :)

China Glaze Concrete Catwalk is Runway Ready

Fashion Week is in full swing here in New York City. Over at Lincoln Center and all around Manhattan, designers are sharing their spring collections and new models are making headlines and starting their careers. I love the presence and press nail polish companies have been receiving. It seems more than ever people are noticing what color designers are choosing for their runway shows!

Runway-ready polish China Glaze Concrete Catwalk is a smoky chalk board grey. Finding a true grey is tricky - they can tend to look too blue, too green, or too purple. But Concrete Catwalk (to my eyes) is a truly grey grey. PS: Greyest grey is one of my picks for top 5 fall nail polish trends, so if you're still searching, look no further than Concrete Catwalk!

China Glaze nailed the formula with Concrete Catwalk. This polish was just about perfect in one coat, and adding a second evened out thin spots left by my unsteady hand.

When I was out wearing Concrete Catwalk, two strangers went out of their way to tell me they loved this nail polish. This is honestly a rare occurrence - this is NYC and usually the only interaction between two people on the street is an occasional "excuse me" or "am I heading uptown or downtown?" :)

In NYC, China Glaze can be purchased at Beauty 35 at 505 8th Ave (corner of 35th St and 8th Ave) As of March 2012, Beauty 35 no longer carries China Glaze and Beauty Plus Salon at 2568 Broadway (between 96th and 97th).

Nails Inc FNO is a Backstage Pass for your Nails

On Fashion's Night Out, London based nail polish brand Nails Inc released a special edition polish simply named "FNO" at 15 Sephora locations in Manhattan. I was lucky to locate this shade early into the night and was excited not only because the metallic steely-blue hue is intriguing, but because this is my first Nails Inc polish!

Nails Inc "FNO" stunned me - this polish only needed one coat! Because I wasn't prepared for the powerful opacity, I needed a second coat to cover some mistakes. Next time, I will try to focus and use only one coat :)

I am also impressed how the finish is metallic without the unfortunate brush strokes other metallic polishes are prone to leaving. "FNO" reminds me of a blue version of Butter London's "Chimney Sweep".

I'm officially in love with Nails Inc! What do you think - is this an original polish or have you seen any like it before?

Fashion's Night Out 2011

Last night was the Fashion's Night Out! The streets and stores of New York City were filled with fabulous-ness and celebrity sightings were abundant (did you hear about the scene in Soho surrounding DASH?)

The first stop on my FNO tour was Sephora to pick up the Nails Inc special edition polish called FNO. I arrived at the 58th and Lex location just before the Hello Kitty crowd started filing in (yes, Hello Kitty was making a guest appearance) and was able to purchase the metallic grey-blue polish and get out painlessly. I'm very excited about this shade as it's my first Nails Inc and look forward to getting it on my nails!

Our next stop was the Meatpacking District. As we arrived at the Color Club Mobile Color Bar (around 8ish), it was actually in the process of closing. The rep apologized and said they had to leave. In the short time I was there, I saw an excited and good sized crowd gathered around the truck, so I'm happy to see their event was successful even if it did have to end early.

The atmosphere around Chelsea Market was electric. It seemed everyone wore their best outfit and I was actually was self-conscious that I wasn't rocking stilettos! My boyfriend and I visited Anthropologie and All Saints, and both stores had live music. The feeling was like being in a club, except for the bright store lighting.

What I love about Fashion's Night Out is the businesses and vendors make an extra effort to treat all guests as celebrities. Set up in the middle of the street, Shop Bop was broadcasting live FNO coverage and interviewing guests red-carpet style. In the stores, employees greeted you in a way that felt like they were thanking you for coming.

We ended our night by walking through the West Village. The line for the Marc Jacobs store was the longest I've ever seen, even longer than the lines for the accessory store back in the day. There was also some kind of Barbie double decker bus driving around. Even though the West Village is not easy to navigate, we found the Teen Vogue block party and saw girls getting Essie manicures.

I was pleased to see so much exposure for nail polish brands this year! For more FNO fabulous-ness, check out http://ny.racked.com/. Fellow NYC blogger Carly from Lacquered Lover posted about FNO, read about her night here.

Did you attend any Fashion's Night Out events in NYC or any other city? I'd love to hear about what you saw!

Fashion's Night Out: Tales from 2010

Fashion's Night Out 2011 is two days away! On September 8th, retailers around New York City and the country will transform to take part in the "best fashion party in history".

I attended Fashion's Night Out 2010 and had a really great time. With events in every neighborhood, FNO might seem overwhelming so I'd like to share a few stories and tips I hope will be useful :)

Everything will be crowded and you will be waiting in lines.
Wow this sounds like a downer to start. But it’s the truth: everything from the Metro Card machines to the bathrooms will draw an epic crowd. Last year, one of my destinations was the Chanel store in Soho to see the new nail polishes (shocking, right?). The line to get in stretched around the corner and to the next block and we waited about a half an hour! This brutally honest tip supports the next one...

Pick one or two events you really want to go to, with the understanding that you may not even get to either of them.
Special edition products and giveaways are limited. Celebrity appearances are brief. Stores will have lines to safely control the volume of visitors. If you go to FNO with a large wish list of destinations, you may be disappointed if you aren’t able to get to everything. However, having a small list will allow you to wander into events as you find them (and you will!) without the concern of getting off track. Any bonus event you stumble upon will be that much more victorious!

Stay within a neighborhood or two.
Events will be happening all over NYC, but you don't want to spend FNO waiting for the subway or paying for a cab to take you all over town. And we’re already anticipating long lines, so make the most of the night and browse the FNO website ahead of time to see what's going on in an area.

Don't expect to do a lot of shopping.
While the intention of Fashion's Night Out is to revive excitement about shopping, not much of it happens on FNO. My boyfriend is fan of Ben Sherman clothes so we thought it would be fun to see if they were having any specials or promotions at their Spring Street store. When we arrived, we were surprised to see that the entire store had been cleared of merchandise – the tables of plaid shirts and Bermuda shorts had been replaced by a DJ and a bar! Speaking of drinks…(read more)

China Glaze Skyscraper Takes Glitter to New Heights

Two kinds of 'Skyscrapers' as seen from the High Line

China Glaze "Skyscraper" is the knock-out blue glitter polish from this fall's Metro collection. The name of this shade is right on - this polish dazzles just like the city lights at dusk :)

Say goodbye to layer after layer of glitter polishes of the past - seen below, this is just (2) coats of "Skyscraper"! The glitter pieces are suspended in the cool blue jelly and the balance of color and glitter is perfect. Because the blue is thin, the silver glitter takes on a range of color. Like looking down into water, as the glitter gets deeper, so does the color. I'm excited about this kind of glitter polish and am looking forward to more like it!

Did you pick up this beauty from the Metro collection? If you're located in Manhattan, I saw the Metro collection (and a large selection of China Glaze polishes) at Beauty Plus Salon on Broadway between 96th and 97th.

Top 5 Fall 2011 Nail Polish Trends and NYC Events

Fall in NYC is quite possibly the most fashionable time for the city. Fashion week attracts the most stylish individuals and inspires us all to think about putting together our outfits and color pairings in new ways.

Of course, choosing a chic polish is key to finishing any look! As the summer winds down, the days get shorter and polishes get a little more dark and dusty. While there are so many great fall colors, I selected five I think are standouts this season. For each color I'll share a polish in my collection and a link for you to see some other options!

Gotham Polish's Top 5 Fall 2011 Nail Polish Trends:

#5 Layer Your Glitters
Wear it under, wear it over, even wear it in between! Call it what you will - glitter sandwich, jelly sandwich - use any color, shape, or size glitter polish in a new way this fall. Thanks to so many tips and tricks from bloggers, removing glitter is no longer scary. For a great remover "recipe", be sure to check out Loodie's "concoction" of acetone and glycerin.

Candy mani
Milani "Gems" over Essie "Fiji" and under OPI "Step Right Up"

Chromatic Misadventures: Jelly Sandwich
Hedonism, Limited: Extreme Jelly Sandwich
Kiss My Acetone: Pink Glitter Sandwich
Polished Casual: Jelly Sandwich

#4 Warm, Dusty Brown
Before you say Chanel Particuliere was "so last year", just look at this gorgeous, ashy milk-chocolate shade. L'Oréal "Devotion" rekindled my love for this subtle and sophisticated hue. This creamy color reminds me of a crisp, cool afternoon when the shadows start getting long and the leaves are just beginning to fall.

L'Oréal "Devotion"

Mirannie's Nails: piCture pOlish "Cowboy"
Musings from Manhattan: Essie "Glamour Purse"
Nailtastic: OPI "A-taupe the Space Needle"
Sonidlo's Nail Polishes: Rescue Beauty Lounge "Decorous"

#3 Grey-est Greys
I read once in the morning newspaper you get for free in the subway something about how "fashion bloggers with grey nail polish" had dominated the front rows at fashion week. Reading this ingrained an association with grey nail polish and blogger influence that makes me smile :) Another fashion week is just around the corner so break our your grey-est grey polish!

China Glaze "Concrete Catwalk"

Lacquer Addicts Anonymous: OPI "Skull and Glossbones"
Nailstah: Deborah Lippman "Waking Up in Vegas"
Perky Polish: Zoya "Harley"
Polish Chest: Manglaze "Fuggin Ugly"
Rachel Marie's Nails: Pure Ice "Kiss Me Here" (scroll down, it's the third polish)
Une Ruxi à Paris: Sally Hansen "Grey Area"

#2 Uglies!
"Ugly" is the new... pretty? This fall, we're seeing murky yellow greens boldly taking center stage and challenging what we traditionally consider a beautiful color. Break out an "ugly" shade and you'll be on top of the fall color game.

Mattese Elite "Amazing Rush"

My Nail Polish Online: China Glaze "Trendsetter"
The Nailphile: Zoya "Dree"
Neglelakkmani: OPI "Uh-oh Roll Down the Window"
Nihrida: Kleancolor "Fashionista"
The Trace Face Philes: Butter London "Wallis"

#1 Deep Raisin Purple
Dark purple is a tough shade to perfect - too dark and it's hardly indistinguishable from black, too bright and it's simply purple. But this season every polish brand gave us a lovely dark raisin/eggplant purple shade that's just dark enough. Deep raisin is versatile and perfect for the changing seasons.

Essie "Carry On"

All Things Nails!: Maybelline "Purple Trend"
Pixie Polish: Zoya "Anja"
Polish Chest: OPI "Honk if you Love OPI"
Une Ruxi à Paris: China Glaze "Urban Night"
Vampy Varnish: MAC "Purple Majesty"

And now in order by date, here are my top 5 fall event picks in New York City - and these are all free to attend!

Fall Festivals

New York City street fairs and festivals are fun all year, but the fall ones bring out some really great food.

The Village Halloween Parade is known around the country, but did you know about the Tompkins Square Park Halloween DOG Parade? See pictures from 2010 here. If you visit New York City anytime in October, there are plenty of costume shops and professional haunted houses to get you in a spooky mood :)

Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade
November 24, 9AM from 77th and Central Park West to Herald Square
http://gonyc.about.com/cs/thanksgiving/a/tdayparade.htm
You may have seen the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade on TV, but seeing the balloons in person is a sight to behold. Line up early, dress warm, and bring your camera!

New York City Marathon
November 6th, all boroughs
http://www.nycmarathon.org/
The marathon in NYC is an electric event to attend. On November 6th, over 700,000 athletes from around the world run for charity, for themselves, and for many other inspiring reasons. This is another event you may have seen on TV, but cheering from the sidelines is even better.
