Silver in the City

There's a shiny new building in downtown Manhattan. Designed by Frank Gehry, you could call this new silver landmark home - yes, it's an apartment building! Towering over New York City at 867 feet and with 903 apartments, New York by Gehry at 8 Spruce Street is the tallest residential building in New York City the Western Hemisphere (the Statue of Liberty is 305 feet). I love how the twisting shape makes the building look like it's alive and moving.

You may have heard of Frank Gehry - he designed a collection for Tiffany's!

Celeb City by Sally Hansen is the most shiny silver in my collection. With a clean, foil finish my nails are almost reflective!

This design of New York by Gehry is certainly an inspiring addition to the skyline. If you're interested in renting, units are available - but studios start at $2,630. YIKES!

What About Breakfast at Tiffany's For Audrey?

Ah, the Tiffany & Co 5th Ave flagship store. Endless counters of silver, diamonds, and other pretty things to admire. Visiting the 5th Ave Tiffany's is not too different from visiting a museum!

Almost as famous as the jewelry is Tiffany blue. Did you know that Tiffany's has a trademark on it?

China Glaze's For Audrey is pretty darn close to the famous hue. This creamy polish toes the line between light blue and aqua/teal, drawing second looks to contemplate the color.

The Tiffany & Co flagship store is located at 5th Ave and 57th St in Manhattan.

Hop in the Metro Chic Cab

How would you like to take THIS taxi?! While it's not the Cash Cab, imagine hailing a taxi the color of your favorite nail polish. How many bottles of polish do you think it takes to paint a cab?

I adore Metro Chic by SOPI. I do. It's grey, it's purple, it's murky, and it's sophisticated. This was the first Sephora by OPI color in my collection, and since then I've certainly returned for more.

What would you say classifies someone as 'Metro Chic'?

Gotham Polish News

photo taken from the High Line

Life at Gotham Polish is getting exciting!

I WON Body & Soul's OPI Femme de Cirque giveaway! I can't WAIT to share pictures with you of this lovely collection! I am so grateful - this is the first blog giveaway I've ever won :) Mary from Body & Soul has a wonderful blog I encourage you to visit.

Second exciting update here at Gotham Polish is that I made a Facebook page. I honestly do not even visit Facebook much for personal use, but after seeing such amazing pictures people have been sharing, I thought it would be another fun way to connect with polish lovers. If you have a Facebook page, please send me a comment so I can add your page to my favorites! (Also, if you have any tips - I find the setup process not very intuitive).

Zoya Crystal goes to the Plaza

Zoya Crystal at the Plaza

Pack your bags and don't forget your favorite Zoya color - Zoya's Crystal is heading to the Plaza! The Plaza Hotel on 5th Avenue and across from Central Park is a true New York City landmark. When the Plaza opened in 1907, rooms went for $2.50 a night, while today you would spend around $700 a night, or hey why not - buy a condo for $50 million dollars :)

While the Plaza is setting the standard for the finest hotel experience, Zoya nail polishes set the bar for outstanding nail polishes. The colors stay ahead of the trend and are perfect to apply.

Crystal is one of my favorite colors in my collection. The vivid sky blue has flecks of gold, and finishes as a stunning foil. There are many wonderful pictures of this color on the internet, but this color is one best seen in real life to appreciate.

Zoya Crystal

Zoya nail polish can be purchased on the Zoya website.

This was one of the colors I received during Zoya's recent "three free nail polishes" promotion. Read more about my disclosure policy here.

China Glaze Ahoy! and First Mate take to the Seas

South Street Seaport is a historic district in lower Manhattan on the East River. Several old ships are docked here - it's not hard to picture what old timey New York would have looked like, because this was the original port of New York City! The 'Peking' (pictured above) is 100 years old this year, while 'Helen McAllister' is even older from 1900.

Of course Ahoy and First Mate from China Glaze were on board!

Ahoy! is a bright, deep pink with glassy shimmer (a very similar finish to Strawberry Fields).

First Mate is a bold navy blue that looks regal and sophisticated.

I loved the colors from the Anchor's Away collection, I've never purchased so many colors from the same collection! What collection did you find yourself needing many (or all!) of?

Be a Femme Fatale with Victoria's Secret

The Victoria's Secret PINK store in Soho, (New York City not London lol) invites you to celebrate it's birthday this weekend! I read on Racked that there will be a DJ, snacks, and prizes. RSVP via Facebook.

Femme Fatale by Color Club layered over your favorite pink polish would be a fitting combo to wear to this event. This pink shimmer is a great layering polish - it reminds me of pictures I've seen of the CND Nail Effects line.

What do you think - is this a "don't miss" or a "don't go near there" event? :) If you head down to the party this weekend, I've love to hear about it!

Beauty 35 - It's Genius!

Beauty 35 GP

Beauty 35 is a beauty supply shop located at 505 8th Ave (on the corner of 35th St). It's almost right across the street from Penn Station/Madison Square Garden. I adore taking a trip to this shop - they have a large selection of polishes by OPI, Essie, and Orly. There are old and new colors to be found, as well as various nail treatments and implements. Oh, and lots of wigs! Beauty 35 is the only place in New York City that I've found NYX products (no NYX nail polish though).

Beauty 35 is one of the few stores in Manhattan that has a 'sale' section. I actually get excited when I visit, because there are always new colors marked down.

I picked up Essie's It's Genius at Beauty 35. I found this one on sale for just $3.99!

It Takes "Pure Energy" to Roller Blade!

Central Park is arguably the best place to celebrate spring in the city. The trees start turning green, the boats return to the pond, and flowers start to bloom. There are so many ways to enjoy the park - one popular activity is roller blading! One place in the park you are certain to find inline skaters of all abilities is by the Band Shell (it's just south of the Bethesda fountain). On this particular day when I was out walking, an obstacle course of sorts had been set up and skaters were taking turns skating through cups - erm, nail polish.

Color Club Pure Energy is a vivid neon blue with an amazing shimmer that simply lights up one's nails. I fell in love with this color after seeing an amazing swatch on Nail Juice. It's from an older Color Club collection, but I was lucky enough to pick it up at Essentials Plus on the Upper West Side only a few weeks ago (see: Where to Shop).

Neons and OPI Black Shatter are meant to be together!

Do you roller blade? I would love ride around in Central Park - maybe I should save up for some skates!

Black Cherry Chutney by OPI visits The World's Largest Store

Welcome new readers! I woke up this morning and realized that I've reached over 50 followers. I'm so appreciative of your support and love sharing this blog with each and every one of you :)

If you've been to New York City, you may have visited Macy's in Herald Square in Manhattan. The 34th street location opened in 1902 and with 11 floors, holds the title of "the world's largest store"!

Recently I read on Gothamist that there is a FIVE STORY BUILDING concealed by the giant shopping bag!  But this isn't actually part of or owned by Macy's. Ephemeral New York says this part of the building is "one of the most famous 'holdouts' in New York real estate history".

Black Cherry Chutney by OPI also has a hidden side to it. This polish applies perfectly, and the glowing red shimmer is subtle that it's almost only for you to see.

Macy's in Manhattan is worth a visit... they have an incredible selection of, well, everything! And even if you aren't interested in shopping, the building is historic and awesome inside. You can still ride wooden escalators.

And speaking of shopping, check out the page Where to Shop, where I will continue to update the list of great nail polish stores in New York City.

China Glaze Pelican Grey - Birds Love It, Too!

All the way downtown in Battery Park City, Pelican Grey by China Glaze made a friend. While New York City's infamous bird is the pigeon, it seems there are just as many seagulls hanging around the docks.

Pelican Grey is a light neutral grey with a tiny shimmer makes this color better than your average sea bird!

Spring 2011 is Here with Roses and Pearly Pastels

"The Roses" by William Ryman

Can you believe tomorrow is finally the first day of spring? These flowers are already in bloom on Park Avenue in Manhattan! From 57th to 67th streets, giant, colorful roses (with bugs!) designed by Will Ryman tower over Park Ave.

What better way to celebrate spring than with pastel colors. The Maybelline Spring 2011 nail polish collection captures spring with six limited edition colors:  Pink Glimpse, Blue Brilliance, Lilac Luster, Sunlight, Pink Halo, and Firefly. I was thrilled to pick these up at Bed Bath & Beyond.

Pink Glimpse is a soft pink with a pearl shimmer. This was the most opaque of the colors I selected.

Lilac Luster is a pearly purple. I love the way this color shines!

Blue Brilliance is a pale blue that flashes pearly pink. The pink is more pronounced than captured here. This was the sheerest color and would look great layered over a light blue.

Sunlight is a pearly gold that was not quite a sheer as Blue Brilliance, but would also look great layered.

Did you find these new colors by you?

New Essie colors spotted - and not in Walmart!

Are you wondering "where can I find those new Essie colors in New York City?" You know, the new ones showing up in Walmart such as Master Plan, Jamaica Me Crazy, or Mochaccino? Guess what! No Walmart, no problem!

I found all the new Essie colors in the Walgreen's on 34th street (350 5th Ave). Yes, it is under the Empire State Building!

Dive Bar Walgreens

The Essie display is new at this location, and these polishes have the sticker on the side and name on the cap.

Essie in Walgreens

I chose Dive Bar, the deep blue with turquoise shimmer. I love how dark the blue is, without looking black.

Have you been able to find these Essie colors by you? Have you seen them around NYC?

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

Stone Street, lower Manhattan

Leprechauns are sure to be out tonight. Stone Street is one of the oldest streets in New York City, settled in the early 1600s. Today, several restaurants line Stone Street and the alley comes alive on St. Patrick's Day. I took this picture a few days ago - what a great place to celebrate!

My color of choice this St. Patrick's Day is Call You Later by Sinful Colors. With green and gold pieces, some big and some small, I could think of no better color in my collection to wear today!

Enjoy the holiday - I can't wait to see pictures of your green nails!

St. Patrick's Day Parade in New York City

St. Patrick's Cathedral, 5th Ave between 50th and 51st St

Tomorrow is the 250th St. Patrick's Day Parade in New York City! You can watch the parade live starting at 11:00AM EST on the interwebs here. There is certainly no shortage of events around town - something is happening in every neighborhood of New York City. You can search for events in your area here.

Today's bright green is Twiggie by Mattese Elite. Mattese Elite is a brand of nail polish sold at Ricky's NYC (I'll be posting about more Ricky's, because it is truly a wonderful store). Oddly enough, Color Club makes a green exactly like this, also called Twiggie. Thoughts?

Twiggie looks like an amped-up version of Peppermint Patti. Seriously, it's a neon pastel.

See more pictures of St. Patrick's Cathedral...

Still Searching for a Green Polish?

I saw this Sinful Colors display at Walgreen's on 34th street (350 5th Ave between 33rd and 34th). The colors were too bright for my iPod to handle, but would look great together!

Have you decided what color(s) you will wear for St. Patrick's Day?

MAC Peppermint Patti Shake

It's March which means the return of the SHAMROCK SHAKE to McDonald's! Have you had a Shamrock Shake? It's a mint flavored milk shake that is bright green!

I was introduced to the Shamrock Shake in college, but after graduating and returning to New York, was sad to hear the Shamrock Shake was not sold around me. Actually, it seemed no one - including employees of McDonald's - had ever hard of them.

But this year, at last Shamrock Shakes are being sold in New York City! There is actually a website dedicated to finding the Shamrock Shake (it's as good as finding a four leaf clover) -find out if there is a Shamrock Shake by you.

If there is one polish I own that would love the Shamrock Shake, it would be MAC's Peppermint Patti. As elusive as the Shamrock Shake, I recall my mission of searching counter after counter at a multi-level mall out on Long Island for this magical color!

Can you find the Shamrock Shake by you?

Selection Sunday: Choose Me!

Tonight is a big night for college basketball - 68 teams will be selected for the NCAA bracket, kicking off March Madness! Just last night, the Big East championship game was held in Madison Square Garden.

I would imagine most everyone reading has a hard time picking just one favorite nail polish color. If your favorite colors faced off head to head, who would win?

I know Choose Me by Essence would be fighting strong for a top spot! This turquoise foil out glistens the competition, and with the 99 cent price tag it is hard to match in value.

You can watch the college basketball selection tonight at 6PM on CBS. Did your alma mater make the tournament?

Cosmetic Show! Part 2 (of 2)

Cosmetic Show, 150 East 55th Street (between 3rd and Lex)

Today is part #2 of Street Wear colors that I purchased at Cosmetic Show!

Burnt is a mustard-y yellow. If this color is calling out to you, do not fear as Cosmetic Show has a LARGE stock of this one. Update: As of August 2011, the stock of Street Wear was very, very low.

Blood is rust red/brown with a glowing shimmer. This color applied the best out of all and looks fantastic.

Prince Charming is a pale blue that flashes a greenish-yellow and has sparse holographic shimmer. I can't say I've seen anything quite like it! This was a very exciting find.

Sadly, my bottle of Illusion was almost all dried up. I tried to use it, but the consistency was tar-like. The color is grey with a pink shimmer, and small silver glitter flecks.

In conclusion! If your favorite drug store product has been discontinued, there's a good chance that it's retired to a bin at Cosmetic Show. For more Street Wear swatches and information about Cosmetic Show, click hereUpdate: As of August 2011, the stock of Street Wear was very, very low.

I will be featuring more stores like this and will keep updating the Where to Shop page, so do check back!

Cosmetic Show! Part 1 (of 2)

Cosmetic Show, 150 East 55th Street (between 3rd and Lex)

I'm excited to tell you about a store located in midtown east that sells old nail polish. Cosmetic Show has a wide assortment of perfume, foundation, lipstick, lip liner, and eyeliner among other random products (ex: snack food) from years past. While the nail polish selection pales in comparison to the tables and tables of lipsticks, I was giddy where I found bags of Street Wear bundled in packs of - wait for it - FOUR FOR ONE DOLLAR! I am pleased to show you the contents of bag #1.

Halo is a bright, frosty, pale yellow gold with tiny silver glitter flecks.

Grass Stain is a pale green with gold shimmer.

Psychadelic has long, holographic pieces mixed with round and square pink glitter. What do you think this would look good over?

Nothing turned out to be my favorite! This beige nude has a little shimmer in it.

I would recommend stopping by Cosmetic Show if you are in the area. While there is no shortage of Street Wear stock here, I think this is the kind of place where you may stumble upon some hidden treasures. Or, the actual Sally Hansen Hidden Treasure - could you imagine!?

Update: As of August 2011, the stock of Street Wear was very, very low.

I have four more colors to show you tomorrow!

I purchased the products featured in this post. Read more about my disclosure policy here.
