Yesterday was Helmer day! The closest Ikea to me is in Brooklyn and there are a few ways to get there by public transportation, but the best is by water taxi. On the weekends, the water taxi is free from Pier 11 (by Wall Street). I hope you enjoy my journey to Ikea Brooklyn in search of the Helmer on the water taxi :)
A dramatic fall sky over the Brooklyn Bridge
Lower Manhattan
Remember the Real World Brooklyn? The house was the building with the red awning!
Docking at Ikea beats parking at Ikea :)
My Helmer on the way home!
While taking the water taxi to Ikea is certainly awesome, do keep in mind that this means everything you buy isn't simply tossed in the trunk of your car and driven home. As a cab to my apartment from Red Hook, Brooklyn would have rivaled Ikea's $99 shipping (OK so that may be a slight exageration), my boyfriend painfully carried my 30 pound Helmer many blocks, down a few subway staircases, and over the turnstiles. Oh, and he'd like me to mention that this was after he ran in a half marathon earlier in the day. THANKS, BOYFRIEND!!!
Tomorrow I will share with you my completed Helmer :)

Your boyfriend rocks. Not every guy would do all of that for a gal and a Helmer. :D
ReplyDeleteI bet that is the first and only picture ever taken of a Helmer and the statue of liberty. This will go down in history. :P I hope it is worth it! Sounds like quite a journey. :)
ReplyDeleteInteresting to see what you had to go thru to get it...but water taxi sounds very cool....and kudos to your boyfriend!
ReplyDeleteGreat post!
ReplyDeleteI'm going to post a virtual tour of my Helmer in a few days! Got it last month- super amazing. Changed my nail life!

ReplyDeleteI went to Fire Island this summer, and took a water taxi for the first time ever. I loved it! At least a hundred times more fun than a normal taxi.

Loving the pictures of NY! I so can't wait to come see NYC in a week! Also can't wait to see the completed Helmer!
ReplyDeleteWOW, that looks so awesome! Here we just go by the lame bus. Boring! Love your pics and can't wait to see it build and filled :). Need some inspiration for some organization issues!
ReplyDeleteIce Queen, seriously! I was totally prepared to carry it myself... but am really glad I didn't have to lol
ReplyDeleteMaria, haha it's a Helmer Odyssey for sure
mrsrexy, the water taxi is GREAT, and free on the weekends so you can just ride it back and forth if you want
Thanks for stopping by, Kay!

Deborah, a bus still beats parking :)
Hey Amy, My sister and I and my 4 yr old niece are going to try to spend a night in NYC. Do you have any good recommendations on hotels that are not so expensive?
ReplyDeleteWow super cool adventure :-P love the pics .... thumbs up to the boyfriend!
ReplyDeleteWhat an adventure!
ReplyDeleteillustratedlady, sorry I don't know anything about the NYC hotel scene!
ReplyDeletePolish AMOR, hehe thanks I'll let him know
Biba, Ikea alone is an adventure lol
Amy, we found a hotel for suer cheap right in the middle of the action! Hotel Pennsylvania. Not the best but location is awesome! I am checking your map for close-by nail polish shops! Can't wait to check out Ricky's-which we don't have and the Sephora's-which we do have but are about an hour and a half away! Thanks for the map-so helpful! Can't wait to buy my first Butter polishes and whatever else I can get my hands on!
ReplyDeleteYikes, what an ordeal to get the Helmer home. I just got mine last week, and was grumbling to myself about having to carry the box up 1 flight of stairs. Maybe if I had run a marathon the day I got it, I would've felt like a Helmer was nothing, though. ;)
ReplyDeleteHaha yes it was quite an ordeal... but hey, beats paying shipping ;) And I don't doubt for a second that moving it up stairs is was HUGE pain! That box is so heavy!
