Do You Remember Your First...

Do you remember your first nail polish? Was it your mother's, your sister's, or your friend's?

My mom had an assortment of nudes, pinks, and reds that were kept in the medicine cabinet in our bathroom. The most unique color was a brownish gold, but it smelled so awful and had the consistency of paste that it was too painful to use.

Do you remember the first time you picked our your own nail polish? I was in middle school when I first came across Wet & Wild. With my own money I bought a purple with blue shimmer - ever so creatively named 417E - at a drug store in town for $0.99. I adored 417E and thought it was the best color ever.

Then came 415A. 415A was a navy shimmer. I spilled 415A all over my bed once.

I'm so happy I still have these polishes after all these years :)

Just for fun, here are my "firsts" by brand:

China Glaze - LOL
Color Club - Factory Girl
Essie - Jackie Oh My!
High end polish - Chanel Mistral
MAC - Peppermint Patti
OPI - Charged Up Cherry
Orly - Passion Fruit
Rescue Beauty - Catherine
Sephora by OPI - Metro Chic
Sinful Colors - What's Your Name
Ulta - Coral Chic
Zoya - Yasmeen

Who else wants to play and share your polish "firsts"? Feel free to use whatever brands you want, and pictures are encouraged of your old polishes of course :) Consider yourself tagged! Leave a comment with a link to your post if you do so desire, I'd love to see.

PS Are these Wet & Wild bottles dated or what!!!

  1. Wow, awesome tag idea! I don't remember my first ever nail polish, but my first one that started my obsession was Sally Hansen commander in chic! First ChG was For Audrey, first OPI was You Don't Know Jacques and first Essie was Sew Psyched!

  5. Oh my gosh your pics just brought back some serious flash-backs! I think if I looked hard I could find 417E in my stash, it looks awfully familiar!

My first polish was a purple shimmer, I remember being so proud of it, I must have been 10 or so. But one day the cap got stuck on, and my dad decided to help by prying it off, and he broke it, and so we had to pour out one of my mom's clear-coat bottles and pour my little purple polish into it. I still have it in this weird obnoxious clear-coat bottle with a huge pink cap on it, but I will never know what the purple actually is! *lol*

@Leslie - Oh Commander in Chic is a neat color, def an obsession starting color!
@Heather - Wow holo in 1994? That's pretty sweet you were so ahead of the trend!
@Biba and Fiona - yay for Ruby Pumps
@Melissa - haha I was hoping someone would recognize these colors! That's a pretty fabulous tale of your nameless purple polish, and awesome that you saved it!

  8. My 'first' polish would have been an Avon that I 'borrowed' from my mother's bedside table. Back then Avon had these long skinny white caps. I was fascinated with base coat and top coat and convinced that I HAD TO use both. I wasn't so good at painting inside the lines (I was seven) so I'd line the bottles up on the back of a magazine and lie on the floor on my stomach and go to town.
Believe it or not my first polish at age 12 or so that was all my own was an Estee Lauder in a shimmery rose. My grandmother was the queen of the 'gift with purchase' and my sister and I used to sit on her bed while she dumped out all the GWP goodies and let us pick through them. (Imagine my shock when I took my allowance to Macy's to buy a replacement eyeliner for the glorious one I'd used to a nub, only to discover that on their own they were $17!) I use more Wet n Wild now as a broke 41 year old than I used as a 12 year old. Of course, its better now than it was in 1982....

  10. Hah! I just had to comment because my first Color Club was also Factory Girl. For the others, here's my list: China Glaze was Anklets of Amethyst, Who Are You Wearing and Ingrid, OPI Black Shatter, NOPI-Spotted and Too Rich for You, Essie Borrowed and Blue, Lippmann Happy Birthday and Across the Universe, Wet n Wild-Teal of Fortune and Sagreena the Teenage Witch, Zoya- Twila. In several cases, I got my first few together at during 1 trip to a store, as a gift, in a 2 pack or during 1 sale, in the case of Lippmann.
